Welsummers originated in the Netherlands in the early 1900s and were developed from several heritage breeds, including Partridge Cochins, Partridge Wyandottes, Partridge Leghorns, Barnevelders, and Rhode Island Reds.
Welsummers are known for their beautiful reddish-brown coloring, distinctive feather patterns, and rich dark brown eggs. Chicks have dark brown and reddish markings, while mature birds develop attractive golden-brown, chestnut, and black plumage.
They have a single comb and clean yellow legs and feet. Welsummers are a great choice for backyard flocks and homesteads, offering both beautiful appearance and excellent brown egg production.
